Surface Texture Recognition by Surface Rendering

چکیده
A model-based texture recognition system which classifies image textures seen from different distances and under different illumination directions is presented in this paper. The system works on the basis of a surface model obtained by means of 4-source Colour Photometric Stereo (CPS), used to generate 2D image textures as they would have appeared if imaged under different imaging geometries. The proposed recognition system combines co-ocurrence matrices for feature extraction with a Nearest Neighbour classifier. The use of the co-occurrence matrices instead of filtering methods for feature extraction allows us to utilise only pixels for which valid information has been extracted by CPS. The validity of the method is demonstrated by classifying texture images captured under different imaging geometries than the reference images in the database. Moreover, the process of recognition allows one to guess the approximate direction of the illumination used to capture the test image.

Texture-mapping is a traditional graphics technique that has several applications in computer graphics rendering. It uses surface signals to achieve a variety of rendering effects, including color mapping, bump mapping (where surface normals are the signal), displacement mapping (geometry), and self-shadowing. While these rendering effects can also be computed in vertex shaders, texturemapping ...

We present techniques for realistic modeling surface details and efficient rendering of the associated visual effects using programmable GPUs. An important topic in rendering surface appearance is the treatment of mesostructures, which are responsible for finescale shadowing, occlusion, inter-reflectance, and silhouettes. One way to model surface mesostructure is by using the bi-directional tex...
متن کاملThree-dimensional surface texture synthesis
Texture synthesis has been extensively investigated by both computer vision and computer graphics communities during the past twenty years. However, the input and output are normally 2D intensity texture images. If the subjects are 3D surface textures (such as brick, woven or knitted textiles, embossed wallpapers etc.), these 2D synthesis techniques cannot provide the information required for r...
